The only downside I can see is that some folks might think the tube is heavy.Personally, I ride for exercise so I don't care about carrying around the extra weight or any effects it may have on acceleration.
Follow up: Well, its been another 4 months now and I still have the same tube in my back wheel.I have to add a little air now and then but in general it is worry free.I recently replaced my old front Slime-filled standard tube with a FlatBlocker Max after an unusually prickly ride was too much for it, it just wouldn't seal anymore. The rear FlatBlocker tube handled the ride without incident.

Product Description:
Keep riding confidently with the Bell FlatBlocker Max self-sealing tube, which features extra thick rubber to prevent most sharp objects from puncturing the tube. If something does get through, Bell's exclusive Slime sealant instantly seals most holes up to 1/8-inch. The tube has a variable thickness, making tires extra thick on the outer rim, where most punctures occur. Bell's AirTight Technology provides a 50 percent improvement in air retention over the leading bicycle inner tubes.
