Kryptonite Keeper 880 Chain & Padlock Review

Kryptonite Keeper 880 Chain and PadlockThis chain is great. It would keep my bike safe from most theifs. But the disc lock is terrible for locking up chains. With the disk lock, the hook of the lock goes into the lock itself. Therefore, you have nothing to hook the chain on to!You are stuck trying to grip to ends of the chain, holding the two links in the perfect position to allow the lock's latch to slide into. And you have to balance the lock in place. While all that's happening, you then must turn the key to bring the latch outside of the lock and through the two chains.

If you want the chain, buy it.But also buy a different lock, unless you want to be seen struggling for 2 minutes every time you want to lock up your bike.

OnGuard Bulldog STD 5010LM Bicycle U-Lock Review

OnGuard Bulldog STD 5010LM Bicycle U-LockThe feature I love about this lock is that it comes with an LED flashlight on one of it's key for those times when you're cycling home at night, and it's dark, and when you fumble to unlock your bike (cos it's cold), you just .... can't... seem to... get.... the key.... in.... arrrghhhh!! but now at least you can see where the hole is and you can insert the key with ease.

The lock is also very well designed in that you can't turn the key unless you've got the key all the way in properly. this helps prevent damage to the lock (and to the key) when you try and force the key to turn without inserting it fully. (although on the first day i got it i thought the lock was jammed. turns out i inserted the key at a wrong angle) it also comes with a lock holder for your bike so that you can attach your lock to it when you're riding too.

it's only rated 2 stars for security, but no one's ever tried to steal my bike but i think having this lock around makes them not want to try. or maybe because my bike is a cheap piece of junk. definitely much more effective than a cable lock. plus onguard has some kinda insurance thing if your bike gets stolen while it's locked with this lock, which provides some additional peace of mind i suppose.

finally, you get free shipping because it's a shade over $25. all in all a satisfactory product. 5 stars.

Kryptonite Keeper 12 LS Bicycle U-Lock with Bracket Bicycle U-Lock (4-Inch x 11.5-Inch) Review

Kryptonite Keeper 12 LS Bicycle U-Lock with Bracket Bicycle U-LockThis lock has several faults
After some weeks of usage the inner cylinder did not move smoothly anymore, so more force was required to open the lock. As a result the key which is made from very soft material got twisted and could not be used anymore.
Furthermore water enters easily into the lock's mechanism. This makes the lock useless for winter conditions - the water inside will freeze and block the mechanism so you just cannot open it anymore.

Kryptonite New York LS Bicycle U-Lock ( 4-Inch x 10.25-Inch) Review

Kryptonite New York LS Bicycle U-LockThis lock is excellent for city use. It's convenient to carry (I either strap it to my rack or throw it in a backpack), and secures both wheel and frame to a rack or sign post. Can't swing a light post, but so what. I used the Krypto chain for many years and found it to be waaay to much of a hassle to lug around.

Tip: This lock sticks like crazy after getting wet the first time. WD40 it a bit and it works like a charm.

OnGuard Bulldog MINI TC 5013TC Bicycle U-Lock Review

OnGuard Bulldog MINI TC 5013TC Bicycle U-LockThe OnGuard Bulldog Mini 5013TC is a very strong, high quality mini U-lock, perfect for use in low to medium crime areas. After a long search that involved reading online reviews, articles, and comments on bike forums I settled on this lock as my best choice. It has worked out well.

Any U-lock, even heavy top of the line locks from OnGuard and Kryptonite, can be cut with power tools in a few minutes. Still, those power tools make a hell of a racket, and most thieves want to avoid attention. If you live surrounded by neighbors who consider bicycle theft using power tools to be entertaining performance art, the Bulldog Mini is probably not the lock for you.

For those of us who live in lower crime areas, where the thieves use manual tools, the best mini U locks (such as the Kryptonite and OnGuard minis) can provide protection equal or superior to heavier, more expensive U-locks against brute force attacks. The mini locks don't provide enough space for a thief to insert a large metal bar or a jack, so he can't apply the force necessary to quickly break the lock. The Bulldog Mini is strong enough to resist bolt cutters and the other standard attacks. Still, one should keep in mind that a thief with a good hacksaw, some spare blades, plenty of time, and a strong arm can eventually saw through the shackle of any U lock. It is best to park your bike in a location where such activity would be noticed.

All the Bulldog Mini's surfaces are covered with plastic, to prevent scratching the bike. The lock comes with a carrying bracket that attaches to the bike frame. Five flat keys are provided, including one key with a built-in light. The 3.5" x 5.5" measurement cited in the ad describes the inside of the U locking area, not the entire lock. The lock is large enough to go around a good-sized knobby mountain bike tire and a standard parking meter post. The most recent version of the 5013TC looks a bit different from the old, with a more cylindrical crosspiece and different coloring: mostly black, with some yellow. They are good looking locks.

If you buy a mini lock, consider using bicycle guru Sheldon Brown's lock strategy. (Google "Sheldon Brown's lock strategy" for more info.) According to Brown, a U-lock should go around the rear wheel and through the rear frame triangle to the parking meter or other secure attachment. The U need not enclose any portion of the frame. The rear wheel cannot fit through the triangle, so the prospective thief must cut all the way through the rear wheel and tire -- not easy to do. The alternative to this strategy is to secure just the frame.

One lock alone will not secure both wheels. Another U-bolt would be overkill where I live. I have a 4' cable that I can loop into the Bulldog and around both wheels, but I don't usually bother with it except when there is no post to which I can attach the Bulldog. Cables can be cut by bolt cutters, so they don't provide much security anyway.

OnGuard Bulldog STD 5010 Bicycle U-Lock Review

OnGuard Bulldog STD 5010 Bicycle U-LockThis lock is pretty robust and has a solid locking mechanism. It's definitely a step above the previous Kryptolok STD which sells for the same price. (UPDATE NOTE: Kryponite has since updated the Kryptolok with the release of "Series 2". My comments reflect the original Krypolock only.)

Onguard comes with a bunch of keys (at least 4 spares + 1 LED key) and has a good locking system. (The Onguard is a double-lock where both ends of the U are secured by bolts) In addition, the lock cylinder of the Onguard lock is technically superior to the old Kryptolock's - not only is it deeper but each of the discs that comprise the locking mechanism can independently rotate, which makes the lock very drill resistant). Finally, the Onguard crossbar seems better protected than the kryptonite's - there's a bulky and relatively thick plastic housing that surrounds it.

The Onguard Bulldog comes with a rather limited but free 1-year protection plan in case your bike is stolen while being protected by select Onguard locks. (The kryptolock has a different protection plan.) The Onguard plan offers up to ~$1251 to replace your baseline bike (doesn't cover accessories or parts you added beyond the baseline) and is valid anywhere besides New York. The key limitation in the plan is that it only applies to locks busted by hand tools AND you must return the broken lock back to Onguard. Keep in mind that only the chain and u-locks have the protection plan.

I've never found a mounting system that I've liked so far, and the onguard lock-mount is no exception. The mounting ring on the U can freely rotate so even if you can position the lock perfectly, it can still swing about. Also, I've found that the lock mount mechanism is a quite tight so you'll really need to struggle with it to get it to work - Personally, I just throw my lock into my basket Topeak MTX Rear Bicycle Basket.

After about a year of ownership in Berkeley, I'll have to say the lock isn't super durable. The plastic end-caps on the crossbar section no longer stay on if the U isn't inserted - but this is merely cosmetic damage as it doesn't really affect the security of the lock.

In the end, it's a great lock for the money.

Kryptonite Evolution Series 4 Standard Bicycle U-Lock with Bracket (4-Inch x 9-Inch) Review

Kryptonite Evolution Series 4 Standard Bicycle U-Lock with BracketWhen I purchased this lock, I actually bought two. I just moved to Chicago, with my girlfriend, and she needed a new lock. She had the older/cylinder(barrel) key kryptonite that you can open with a Bic Pen. I only had a flex lock, and my bike was stolen within the first month we moved here. I have bought a new bike, and Two locks. I'm now using this lock, in combination with the Bell MaxGuard Heavy-Duty Cable(12mm). I carry all this extra weight, because Chicago is 2nd in the nation(next to New York) for bike thefts. It works great alone, but I feel safe with the flex cable combined. There was another Kryptonite Evolution with a flex cable, but the cable was only 10mm.

If you are buying this for the insurance purposes, then I'd suggest looking at the fine print before hand.

The only other Kryptonite lock that is supposed to be tougher than this, would be the Kryptonite NY Fahgettaboudit U-Lock. It was $75 though, and this one was only $42. People wrote that they have problems trying to fit everything with the Fahagettaboudit lock. This one fits both heavy tread tires, my frame, and almost every post/bike stand that I've attempted.

Product Description:
Big city cyclists need big city protection, as would-be thieves aren't intimidated by flimsy cables or weak U-locks. That's why serious cyclists turn to Kryptonite for their security needs. The Evolution Series 4 U-lock is a cut above other bike locks, with a 14mm hardened Max-Performance steel shackle designed to resist both cutters and leverage attacks. Ideal for anyone who lives in moderate to high crime areas, the Series 4 received a 9 on the Kryptonite 1-12 lock comparison system, which ranks the varying levels of security offered by the company's product range. A lock that ranks 1 on the Kryptonite scale might work if you live in the burbs and have a Rottweiler parked next to your bike or motorcycle. A lock that ranks 12, however, is built for maximum deterrence. The Series 4 also offers such security-enhancing features as a double deadbolt locking mechanism for extensive holding power; a disc-style cylinder with more than one million key variations; a reinforced anti-drill/pull cylinder protection system; and a center key location with a dual overhead cam locking mechanism that defends against leverage attacks. The Series 4 is about more than just security, however, with a sliding dustcover that protects and extends cylinder life, anti-rattle bumpers that reduce noise during transport, and versatile EZ mount transportation bracket. And as a bonus, the lock comes with three keys, one of which is lighted with a high-intensity bulb that makes it easy to unlock the Series 4 after dark. The lock measures 4 by 9 inches.
The Legendary Durability of Kryptonite Locks
The first big test for Kryptonite locks came in 1972, when Kryptonite founder Michael Zane directed the Second Avenue Bicycle Shop in New York City to lock a three-speed bicycle to a signpost in Greenwich Village. Although thieves immediately stripped all of the bicycle's removable parts, the bicycle itself remained for 30 days and 30 nights. The publicity gave Kryptonite the boost it needed and forever changed the face of bicycle security. Twenty-two years later, Kryptonite returned to the streets of the Big Apple to test its latest innovation, the New York lock. In April 1994, the New York Post laid down the ultimate challenge: Could Kryptonite's New York lock last 48 hours on the toughest streets of New York? In a city where more than 100,000 bikes are stolen each year, Kryptonite and the Post locked a brand new, bright green Univega road bike worth $600 to a parking meter in the East Village--the Bermuda Triangle of New York bicycle thievery. For a full 48 hours, the bike remained locked on the corner of Avenue A and 11th Street. Zane and Neil McDaid, director of product development and design for Kryptonite, watched from around the corner as the bike came under every possible means of assault, stumping thieves at every turn. After 48 hours the bike remained intact except for the gear derailleur, which had been stripped off. The lock showed definite signs of abuse, but it had not failed. The New York lock had met the Post's challenge.
Not satisfied with the length of the test, Zane moved the bike to SoHo for another six days and, finally, uptown near the Lincoln Center. Even in these high-theft areas the properly locked bike lasted another three weeks before being pulled off the streets by Zane and McDaid. The Post also ran the New York lock through a battery of street tests using common bike theft tools: a 4-foot bolt cutter, a crowbar, and a hammer. The non-Kryptonite locks cracked in seconds, but all methods failed on the New York lock, even the monstrous bolt cutter, which was rendered useless with large dents in its jaws.
About Kryptonite
In the early 1970s, Michael Zane was a free-spirited, bearded kid with a VW van and a big idea for a new kind of lock. He traveled thousands of miles showing the unique U-shaped locking device and spreading his passion for bicycle security to bike dealers all around the country and forged lifetime relationships. The company soon expanded its product line to include power sports, hardware, and snow sports security. Through innovative product designs, cutting-edge marketing savvy, legendary customer service, and pure fanaticism for security, Kryptonite grew with a cult-like following.
In 2001, the company that was started in a VW van was purchased by industry giant Ingersoll Rand and became a flagship brand in the company's Security Technologies sector. Publications such as Bicycling, Fortune, The Wall Street Journal, US News & World Report, and a host of others continued to tout Kryptonite products as the best on the market. The company's dedication to its customers is best represented by its actions during the fall of 2004, when it was discovered that the industry-standard tubular cylinder could be compromised, at times, with a household item. Kryptonite flew into action, created a voluntary lock exchange program, and replaced more than 400,000 locks in 21 countries for free. In essence, the company redesigned the equivalent of nine years worth of new products in just 10 short months. Kryptonite is the only company in the world that offered such a comprehensive plan to customers, taking its "legendary customer service" pledge to new heights.
