OnGuard Akita 5042 Bicycle Combination Cable Lock Review

I bought this lock about a week ago from a local bike store.It worked fine - simple operation, easy to set my own combination.Then two days ago the last digit began sticking.I could turn the other three with no problems, but the fourth required a lot of force to turn, and no matter what digit I turned it to, the lock would not open.

Frustrated, I called Todson's support department (Todson is the parent company that makes OnGuard locks), sat on hold for a couple minutes, and then described my problem to the representative.As I gave my name/address information to him, I began thinking: Great.They're gonna set up some support ticket and two weeks later they'll tell me there's nothing they can do.Immediately after I gave him my information, I heard a phrase that was music to my ears: "We'll send you a new one at no charge.It should arrive within a week."

The lock malfunctioned, but I'll get another for free.Medium- to low-quality lock, but excellent service.

OnGuard Doberman 5027 Bicycle Coil Cable Lock Review

This is a beefy lock.It springs back at you like a slingshot, and wrapping it around you bike is like wrestling with a giant boa constrictors.A self coiling cable this thick takes some muscle to stretch out, and I would advise most women and boys to not get this lock unless they want a workout.The spring tension is so strong on this cable that it will lift my bike off the ground if i lock it to something tall.

a 15mm cable takes some big bolt cutters to slice through, and you can't really be inconspicuous about that.I bought this on sale at Amazon.com for $13.00--a steal for a $35-40 lock.but cable locks are never as strong as U-locks and I think a smaller, less expensive coil lock would offer the same protection and be a lot more convenient.With all cable locks, you should still park someplace with a lot of people around.You might as well have the benefits of a small, lightweight, pliable cable lock.

Don't pay more than $20 for a self-coiling cable lock like this.

Kryptonite Hardwire 2085 Key Cable Bicycle Lock (2-Foot x 6-Inch) Review

I am pleased with this lock. Its length makes it easy to secure the bike to things, though it also makes the lock large to store on the bike. Yet the velcro strip that comes with it makes it easy to secure so it isn't in the way. And the bracket is great, with an easy push-button release. A good, medium-high security lock.

Kryptonite New York Noose 1213 Chain Bicycle Lock with Evolution Series 4 Disc Lock Chain Bicycle Lock (4-Foot x 3-Inch) Review

This lock may in fact be perfect, but certainly not perfect for every one. I for example am a fairly large man who lives in Oaklands famous Killing Zone, where people hesitate to walk around at dusk and most windows have bars and bike theft is the mildest of concerns residents have. So for me carrying a 11lb chain is price worth paying to keep my bike safe, I also use it on my motorcycle.

This chain is a pain at first, it forces you to struggle up the huge hills in the bay area, though now I dare say im in phenomenal shape, and when I do ride with out it Ifeel superhuman.

If a smaller woman or lesser man tried to carry this chain then they had better take it slow and be ready to have their body crumble under the weight.

The choice for many people with expensive road bikes boils down to this.

1.Think about the endless quest to shave off 40 grams from your sweet Carbon fiber bike, you know the one you wont put stickers on because of weight issues.
2.Now think about doubling the overall weight of the bike and looking like a douchewith a giant chain around their shoulder drapped across the even douchier spandex jersey.
2.Now think about your bike being stolen and traded amongst crackheads.
The choice is clear.

OnGuard PitBull MINI 5006 Bicycle U-Lock Review

Debated between this and the NY FORGEDDABOUDIT lock which is about 2-3 times the price. A new TREK 7.5 FX was the motivation. It's sturdy, small enough not to add a huge amount of weight (isn't that why we buy good bikes, the weight?) and to hook my bike to most racks easily, defying leverage. A good buy, good guarantee, too.

I just received this lock today and was heavy! (15½ pounds!)
While I was unlocking my bike a guy came up and tried to mug me at night at 8 PM. This guy came up to me with a knife and said give me your stuff. Before I turned I said " Oh yeah?", I then proceeded to grab the chain and lock and started swinging violently and said " What now mother f****r!", the mugger got scared , dropped his knife and ran away.
Pros: Strong
Cons: Bulky , Heavy (15.5 pounds)

OnGuard PitBull STD 5003 Bicycle U-Lock Review

The lock itself seems sturdy enough. At least one review found it resistant to most attacks. ([...]) It is long enough to capture both the front wheel and the frame, along with a fencepost, which is a good thing if you have a quick-release front wheel (which can be removed in 2 seconds without tools.)

However, the lock is too big to mount inside the frame of my 53 cm road bike. (The mount requires a little clearance above the lock to allow the lock to be slid up out of its mount.) That is not a small bike, and there are many bikes with smaller frames.

Luckily, the lock and mounting system is flexible, accommodating nearly any tube size. The piece that takes the lock can be removed by unscrewing four screws, and rotated 90 degrees. Also, the mounting piece on the lock itself can be rotated by loosening a set screw. Those two things mean the lock can be mounted several different places on the frame. The instructions give several suggestions, with a list of pros and cons of each. One problem with a few locations is that the lock can interfere with your pedal stroke.

The mount itself is not all that easy to attach to the bike. You have to place an thin, H-shaped piece of rubber (included) between the mount and the frame to keep it from sliding around. The rubber isn't attached or glued to the mount for some reason (possibly because it is a last-minute addition) so it is easy to lose. It also doesn't fit the mount exactly. Idropped it few times before I got the mount on securely.

These new mounts use a strap of nylon that you wrap around a frame tube and pull tight, then tighten further by turning a ratcheted bolt that takes up the slack. (That operation requires a metric hex wrench, which you are likely to have because lots of other things on the bike require metric hex wrenches.) You can get pretty good tension on that strap. However, depending on where you put the mount, something (like the rear reflector) can block access to the tightening bolt.

Unluckily, I chose a location that did interfere with my pedaling (it is impossible to be sure whether or not a position will interfere with pedaling without actually mounting it in that position.)

And this is the major flaw with the mount. You cannot reposition it without cutting the strap or probably damaging the mount. The ratchet, being a ratchet, turns only one way. So you can only tighten the strap, you can't loosen it. You can try to turn the ratchet the wrong way, but that usually breaks the ratchet, and this one doesn't seem all that robust. So I am waiting for tech support from OnGuard for advice. If need be, I will just cut the strap and get a new mount from REI (unlike Amazon, REI offers a lifetime guarantee on everything it sells.)

Kryptonite Evolution Series 4 LS Bicycle U-Lock with Bracket (4-Inch x 11.5-Inch) Review

There is no doubt that this is a solid lock. It weighs as much as an anchor, and with its dual-locking mechanism it is pretty much impossible to break open (though it has been done with those air guns that are used to kill cattle in slaughter houses). It has rubber all around on the outside and a dust-cover for the key hole. Basically, if you are familiar with Kryptonite lock construction this is pretty much like all the others.

It comes with a key that has a little LED in it, making it easy to unlock this at night, though it is rather bulky to keep around in one's pocket.

This lock will stop any thief in their tracks, but for something that is this heavy, you might as well purchase one of Kryptonite's New York locks, which are much more solid in construction (if that's possible), as is evidenced by Kryptonite's increased insurance policy for those locks. If you are on the fence between this one and a New York lock, price and features should be the only factor, because both Series 4 locks are the same size locks in the New York line are pretty much the same weight.
