Classic Tough Tire Trike Review

Classic Tough Tire TrikePurchased this for my son's second birthday. He really loves it, although he can't pedal it just yet (and he's 3 feet tall), but it shouldn't be too long before he can reach and gets the hang of it.The assembly instructions were a little lacking, all pictures and kind of confusing, but it did go together pretty quickly.Seems tough and durable. So far we are all very happy with it.

InStep Pink Lady Pedal Car Review

InStep Pink Lady Pedal CarI had a nice old all metal pedal car just like this as a kid.Who didn't?

Of course, mine was a rusty old hand-me-down from my elder cousins. That car, like this car, was made of steel. They tend to last a long time; they go through a lot of kids!Despite the rust, I loved that thing and I played with it constantly.

Now my daughter has the same thing to enjoy.Heavy?Sure.It's built like a tank.BUT how many other pedal cars out there can you wash, wax, and buff just like daddy does to his car?

Besides, more parents should be buying HUMAN-powered toys for kids today. What kind of 4 year old needs to be relaxing in a giant plastic humvee with blingin' rims just stomping on a pedal to make a electric motor propel them around the yard?

They've got plenty of time to get lazy later. In the meantime, have 'em work up a sweat and sleep hard.

I left off the decals and went for a sano look. The chrome polishes up nicely!

Kettler Aero Air Tires Pedal Car Review

Kettler Aero Air Tires Pedal CarLooked at LOTS of pedal cars hoping to find one my extremely tall 5-year old can hang on to for a couple years, and maybe pass along to his little sister. We have a roughly paved 1.5 mile running course around the neighborhood, and I wanted to find a ride for Jr that he could burn off some cals while I struggle through my knee-rehab walks. I checked out other models at the local stores and found a common problem. Hard plastic wheels and short wheelbases/frames. Not a good combination for a tall child and a rough path. The air-filled tires and longer frame on this car solved both of those issues, and I can report it rides VERY WELL on our path.

It's no picnic to assemble, and as the other review noted, the build quality isn't great, but let's be realistic about expectations. The tires/rims alone would run $50+ in a hardware store (they're basically wheelbarrow tires)so that doesn't leave much for quality control. Any child's bike runs $50+, that gets you a frame with chains/pedals. $200 is not a bargain, but now at $160, it's approaching a must have. While not drilled particularly well, and I can see how a bolt/hole might be missing, but it is very sturdy, and that's important for an abusive rider.

Never satisfied, I've already modded the unit. First prbblem...hills. My little guy can't pedal up the ones on our course, and although the back of seat has a handle on it, bending over to offer a little assistance was a back breaker. I used some conduit and fashioned a tall, U shaped push handle, attached it to the back of the seat with the conduit straps (4). Covered with standard pipe insulation. Works like a champ!! $5 in materials, but I already owned a conduit bender.

Something to look out for...the brake works, but it's not intuitive for a 5-year old. They respond to terror on the downhill but putting their feet down Flintstone style. I had to teach Jr how to use the brake and reinforce it very often by playing a little "brake" game on the flats. He's got it now, but the first run was spooky, worsened by the fact you have to take one hand off the wheel to use the brake. Make sure Jr has that nailed BEFORE the first downhill! No seat belt either...I'm thinking of a velcro strap solution like the one he has on his battery powered yard jeep.

Regarding the comment about how a 9-year old might only get one season out of it...probably true. It's not a large frame, and the company says 5-9 years. The geometry just doesn't work as the kids get older, so this is definitely a starter machine in the age category. There are larger ones out there for the older kids, but the price points push $300, and I think by th

Fisher-Price Dora's 10th Anniversary Lights and Sounds Trike Review

Fisher-Price Dora's 10th Anniversary Lights and Sounds TrikeAdmittedly this trike is a lot of fun, however not in the way that I think it was intended. Instead of actually riding the trike all my daughter does is sit and push the buttons. She can sit for hours and just play with the buttons, however she doesn't go more than a few feet whenever she tries to ride the trike. At first I thought that it was because she was just too distracted by the buttons, but I later realized that it was because it was too difficult for her to push the pedals.I bought this for her when she was 2 and now she is almost 4 but she still just sits on the trike and pushes the buttons and she still can't push the pedals well enough for it to be fun for her.I think it has to do with the positioning of the pedals in relation to the seat, because she just can't seem to get her feet at the right angle to be able to cycle the pedals in a smooth consistent motion. At first I thought maybe she just wasn't coordinated enough to ride a trike, but she does just fine on the Radio Flyers and even her big girl bike with training wheels is easier for her than this product which said it was for younger kids.Though I have to hand it to Fisher Price, almost two years and this puppy is still going strong. And its not like we took great care of this trike. It has been primarily outside the whole time and seen record rains and snowfall and, albeit the stickers are a little faded, all the buttons still work just fine. If only the trike itself was fun and easier to ride, this would have been a great toy.

Radio Flyer Classic Red 10-Inch Bicycle with Chain Drive Review

Radio Flyer Classic Red 10 inch Bicycle with Chain DriveMy 3 yr old boy just received this for his b-day. I was a little concerned re: it's size being to small (short use span) for him, but I do not believe that this will be the case at all. I also have a 4 yr old boy which rides this bike comfortably. The bike is rock solid (it is fairly heavy) and the quality seems well above average. Despite the bike being only a 10" model, I think it will suit the average 2 1/2 - 5 yr old fine. There is ample room to elevate both the seat and handle bars. The solid rubber tires and solid rubber training wheels (the latter both have contact with the ground at all times along with the rear wheel--no tippy wobbles!) provide a smooth and quiet glide. The bell has that fun classic ring! The seat has nice padding. The bike has a good bikechain/pantleg guard. There is NO BRAKING function on this model. I think that this bike would be a good alternative to buying both a tricycle and a small two-wheeler like this. I wish I had realized this before already buying two tricycles! For those of you contemplating a tricycle still, the Kiddio Supertrike 4 can not be beat-the quality is outstanding! (I wrote a review for that trike on June 20, 2002.)
