Bell AirStrike Dual Action Frame Pump Review

Bell AirStrike Dual Action Frame PumpPeople are apparently not following (or are misunderstanding) the basic instructions, leading them to believe the pump doesn't work. Here's what it says on the box that mine came in:

'With pump lever in UP position, tighten screw cap to ensure proper seal.'

The screw cap is the knobby appendage surrounding the stem connector. The pump lever is on the opposite side, and UP position means to move it away from the pump body. You MUST first move the lever up and then tighten the screw cap in order for the pump to work. Be sure to tighten it all the way, until you encounter strong resistance. Tightening the cap applies pressure to the rubber sleeve inside, which causes it to bulge inward and form a good fit around the valve stem. If you make the rubber sleeve TOO tight and it won't fit over the valve stem, only then should you loosen the cap slightly until it will fit.

'Lock lever in DOWN position.'

Pushing the lever down applies the final bit of pressure to the rubber sleeve inside, creating an airtight fit around the valve stem. When you have the screw cap properly adjusted, the lever will offer some resistance as you push it down, and then it will lock in place against the body.

That's it. Now you can use the pump. When you're done, flip the lever away from the body and remove the pump.

Now that we're over that hurdle, the good news about the pump is that it's amazingly small and light, and it works great for inflating sports balls, which is the main thing I bought it for.

The only issue I've found is that it's pretty hard to generate high pressure with the pump. I'm reasonably strong, but am unable to inflate bicycle racing tires to their proper level using this. In spite of that, I'm giving the pump five stars here to offset all of those ratings from the people who just didn't use it correctly.

Blackburn Mountain Air Mountain Bike Pump Review

Blackburn Mountain Air Mountain Bike PumpI was shopping for a pump with the intention of purchasing the carbon fiber version. After checking out the difference in price I decided I would not use the pump often enough to spend the extra money. A month or so later I ended up flatting and was dreading using the pump, to my surprise this pump was so solid and so fast that I told every cyclist I know to buy one and I forever tucked away my CO2 cartridges.

Although I do not recommend you use this pump daily, it is strong enough to handle the use. Buy this pump without hesitation, you will not regret you purchase. I've been riding mountain bikes for over 20 years and this is the first pump I've used that was worth recommending.

Topeak JoeBlow Sprint Floor Bike Pump Review

Topeak JoeBlow Sprint Floor Bike PumpGreat pump. Key aspects:
1) Steal base is wide and stable.
2) Pressure guage is located at top of shaft. It is easy to read as far as pump guages go.
3) Pumping is effortless. I attached it to my mini-van tires, and with a good deal of pumping, was able to top off the pressure. Not more convenient than a air compressor, but definitely do-able in 5 - 10 min of pumping if you need to do it.
4) Pressure guage is accurate, and includes a bleed valve so that you can release air without removing the hose from the valve.

Only complaint: the T-type valve adapter is just a little bulky. It could be a problem if you need to get it into a really tight space (this problem is very unlikely for the typical user, but possible I think). A cheap valve extender from your local sports store would fix this problem if it occurs, and it may be worth the hassle to have both schrader and presta adapters permanently affixed to the pump.

Definitely a good buy. Would highly recommend, and would definitely buy it again.

Blackburn AirStik 2 Stage Bicycle Frame Pump Review

Blackburn AirStik 2 Stage Bicycle Frame PumpI purchased my first road bike in 25 years this Summer, and prepared for the inevitable flat by carrying a spare tube, tire irons, and this Blackburn AirStick 2-Stage pump. After 250 miles, there it was...a rear tire causing me to swerve suddenly.Gulp.Will the pump hold up after all?

The short answer is that the 2-stage mechanism really worked. With the pump switch set at "low", I was able to fairly quickly inflate the newly installed tube to full size and reasonable thumb-pressure firmness. This was maybe 60 lbs pressure, and maybe it took 60 strokes.Switching to "high" on the pump end, I tested to see how firm the tire could really get.On this setting, each stroke delivers only a small volume of high pressure air, but it makes a difference. After about another 60 strokes, the tire was quite firm to the touch (and I'm estimating that it resulted at about 100 psi). For getting back on the road, this was fine.

Would I use this as my everyday pump?Of course not.Is it adequate to get you going again? Most definitely.

Obviously, I can't comment on its longevity at this point, but I'm satisfied so far.As to the mounting...the clip mount and elastic closure appear durable enough. The supplied mounting clip fits beneath a water bottle cage's threaded openings, and longer screws are provided.Mine is mounted on the seat tube, away from the drive-train side (left crank), just above the front derailleur moung.I have no problems with rattling or any sense that it could become loose.

It's also compact enough to simply slip into a rear jersey or jacket pocket, if you choose. I wouldn't recommend this pump for larger volume, lower pressure hybrid or knobby tires, as you'd be pumping forever.Buy a larger frame pump for that purpose.

Topeak JoeBlow Pro Floor Bike Pump Review

Topeak JoeBlow Pro Floor Bike PumpWhether your bike tires use schrader or presta valves, this bike pump is very easy to use.The night it arrived, I immediately pumped up the tires in both of my bikes to 60psi and barely broke a sweat. The pressure guage that is attached to the frame is the ultimate in convenience. It is really nice to get the immediate feedback from the guage on just how much air is in those tires.I have even used this pump to add a bit of air into my car's tires--it's just that easy to use.I highly recommend this pump.

Schwinn Electric Bike Pump Review

Schwinn Electric Bike PumpI bought this unit because I was sick of paying for air at the gas station.I would have been better served by buying a manual bicycle pump. The unit's inflation rate was very slow and it got very hot during normal operation. The guage was highly inaccurate. It failed (internal air leak) after only a few uses.Well, I guess the on/off switch in the cord functioned - at least until the unit failed.

Run, don't walk, Run away from this product.I wish I could give it zero stars.
