Blackburn AirTower 4 Bicycle Floor Pump Review

Blackburn AirTower 4 Bicycle Floor PumpAfter working hard with other less expensive pumps to get up to the required 110 psi in my bicycle tires I decided to spend a little more money and get something better. After several hours of research I decided that this pump might fill the bill. I was right. The volume of air delivered versus the effort expended is high. It is a cinch to get up to 110 psi. Topping off automobile tires by a couple of psi to 30 psi just takes a few stroke of the pump. I don't even break a sweat in the Texas summer heat when I use this pump. The extra length of the hose is very useful and the pressure gauge at the top of the pump is easily read. The pump appears to be well made and should last a long time.

This is a great pump for the price and the lifetime warranty helped to make my choice. I contacted Blackburn to make sure there were no hidden requirements for the warranty feature and there aren't. I have also used other Blackburn products with satisfaction.

If you are reading this I assume you are in the market for a pump. I heartily recommend it.

Blackburn Redesigned Air Tower 4 Bicycle Floor Pump Review

Blackburn Redesigned Air Tower 4 Bicycle Floor PumpThis pump is very sturdy and has a nicely designed handle. It pumped my road tires to 110 psi quickly with no leaking while pumping (the stems were already a little funky from another pump that I had used which had bent the stemsslightly). Has a separate hole for schrader and presta, so there's no complications with bad fits or things that are going to break. I'm not sure why anyone would buy another brand given their lifetime warranty.I bought one Blackburn mountain bike pump 12 years ago. Three years ago a part broke, I sent it to them and they sent me a new pump.No questions. On a 9 year old pump that had been used on lots of muddy single track....

Reading some reviews on other pumps I would like to note:when you release a very high pressure pump from a tire, there will be a large discharge of air. This is coming from the pump, not the tire (at least if it's a well designed pump) and is normal.

Product Description:
The AirTower 4 gets even better thanks to a completely redesigned cast aluminum base that is a whopping 275% stiffer than the previous design, and also wider for a more stable platform. It also receives an all-new doublebarrel head that boosts reliability and is also rebuildable, and a more robust pressure gauge. These upgrades, along with the tried-and-true aluminum barrel and ergonomic handle, make the AirTower 4 a class leader.

Bell AirStrike Dual Action Frame Pump Review

Bell AirStrike Dual Action Frame PumpPeople are apparently not following (or are misunderstanding) the basic instructions, leading them to believe the pump doesn't work. Here's what it says on the box that mine came in:

'With pump lever in UP position, tighten screw cap to ensure proper seal.'

The screw cap is the knobby appendage surrounding the stem connector. The pump lever is on the opposite side, and UP position means to move it away from the pump body. You MUST first move the lever up and then tighten the screw cap in order for the pump to work. Be sure to tighten it all the way, until you encounter strong resistance. Tightening the cap applies pressure to the rubber sleeve inside, which causes it to bulge inward and form a good fit around the valve stem. If you make the rubber sleeve TOO tight and it won't fit over the valve stem, only then should you loosen the cap slightly until it will fit.

'Lock lever in DOWN position.'

Pushing the lever down applies the final bit of pressure to the rubber sleeve inside, creating an airtight fit around the valve stem. When you have the screw cap properly adjusted, the lever will offer some resistance as you push it down, and then it will lock in place against the body.

That's it. Now you can use the pump. When you're done, flip the lever away from the body and remove the pump.

Now that we're over that hurdle, the good news about the pump is that it's amazingly small and light, and it works great for inflating sports balls, which is the main thing I bought it for.

The only issue I've found is that it's pretty hard to generate high pressure with the pump. I'm reasonably strong, but am unable to inflate bicycle racing tires to their proper level using this. In spite of that, I'm giving the pump five stars here to offset all of those ratings from the people who just didn't use it correctly.

Blackburn Mountain Air Mountain Bike Pump Review

Blackburn Mountain Air Mountain Bike PumpI was shopping for a pump with the intention of purchasing the carbon fiber version. After checking out the difference in price I decided I would not use the pump often enough to spend the extra money. A month or so later I ended up flatting and was dreading using the pump, to my surprise this pump was so solid and so fast that I told every cyclist I know to buy one and I forever tucked away my CO2 cartridges.

Although I do not recommend you use this pump daily, it is strong enough to handle the use. Buy this pump without hesitation, you will not regret you purchase. I've been riding mountain bikes for over 20 years and this is the first pump I've used that was worth recommending.

Topeak JoeBlow Max II Floor Bike Pump Review

Topeak JoeBlow Max II Floor Bike PumpI've had this pump for about a month.

Pumps up tires/tubes with Shrader valves OK.

The Presta valve side of the twin head does not work properly with short stemmed Presta valves. It seems that the pump nozzle has difficulty in forming a good seal with short stemmed Presta valves. The pump will only pump up to around 75 PSI into the tire/tube. Pressures beyond 75 PSI appear to "seal" the valve, which prevents further tire/tube inflation. The extra pressure just pressurizes the pump hose only!

Pumping to higher pressures is a bit difficult. Especially when compared to easier working pumps such as Specialized and Blackburn brands which I have also.

Overall it is an average pump.

Not recommended for use with short stemmed Presta valves.
