Cateye HL-EL520 LED Bicycle Headlight Review

Cateye HL-EL520 LED Bicycle HeadlightThis light is almost bright enough to use as a single source for night riding, although I wouldn't advise it.It's best use is for when you want to be seen at night, because the blinking mode really is quite bright. In the regular non-blinking mode, it has a tightly focused beam with a bit more diffusion than previous models, so you'll see the beam and a bit of what surrounds the main focus area of the beam, and it seems to have more power than previous models too. But, in my opinion, it isn't strong enough or bright enough to light a large enough area ahead for safe night riding.

I use it in addition to the Topeak Moonshine Commuter light.Using both systems together, I get a really nice centrally lit area and a well lit larger area that greatly adds to my ability to see objects ahead. In addition, by using two light systems, I have a backup if one goes out.(I have a 13 mile night commute and I can tell you it isn't fun to do it in the dark.)

The light comes with an easily installed mounting bracket and the light is easy to attach and detach from the bracket. It is the same mounting system used by the previous models so if you have the old bracket you can use it to switch the light between two bikes. Also, it requires 4 AA batteries but they seem to last a long time.

So, the light is great for being seen, just don't expect it to be good enough as a sole source of light for safe riding at night.I really like this light when used in combination with a second system or for short night rides of maybe 1 or 2 miles. But for longer rides at night or frequent night commutes, I'd suggest you get a more powerful system.

Blackburn Flea Front/Rear Combo Light Review

Blackburn Flea Front/Rear Combo LightIt's quite amazing how something so small could produce so much light. I purchased both the front and tail light combo and love everything about each light.

The front light is incredibly bright in its normal mode and if you crank it up to overdrive mode it gets even brighter. The flashing mode is very noticeable and I'm positive that drivers coming towards you will see the flashing. They'll probably even be annoyed by it.

The tail light is equally impressive and features a steady mode, a flashing mode, and a chase mode which is essentially the lighting pattern that occurs on a police car's roof lights. The red lights are very visible and my family said they could clearly see the tail light even though I was at the very end of my street. Both the front and tail lights can attach to your bike in a variety of places via the Velcro straps provided.

The charging system for these lights is a little different then traditional systems. Each light comes with a small set of jumper cables that attach to a regular battery as the opposite magnetic leads attach to the light itself. The whole system is small just like the lights themselves but works surprisingly well.

Overall, the Blackburn Flea lights are very small but also very bright and are a great investment for someone looking to ride during the nighttime hours.

Kryptonite R4 Retractor Combo Cable Lock (2.6mm x 90) Review

Kryptonite R4 Retractor Combo Cable LockI ordered this lock because I wanted a lock that was light enough to store in my seat bag. It works. This lock isn't designed for serious security but it has a solid feel and a smooth operation that will act as a deterrent to the casual thief.Programming the 4 digit combination lock is a bit tricky but, once programmed, it works smoothly. 3 feet of cable is enough for most applications. I bought one for my wife as well and she uses it frequently and with some expectation of minimal security for short periods.

Again, not serious security but if light and sturdy is what you are looking for give this one a try.

Planet Bike Beamer 5 Headlight Review

Planet Bike Beamer 5 HeadlightFirst off, I'd like to say I own both Planet Bike Beamer 3 and 5.I bought them both from Amazon when they were both priced at about 16 bucks. I've taken both lights out to compare how they would perform. Both lights are very bright and will force cars, joggers, and anyone to notice you.I would say they are the perfect light for urban use and a minimum for suburban use. They light up the road relatively well from 10-20 feet away from you. They both have flashing and constant on modes.Flashing in both models seem to be brighter than constant on.

I do prefer the Planet Bike Beamer 3 over the 5 though. When comparing the two, the 5 seems to scatter the light a little bit.Let me try to explain; when using both lights shining against a wall, they both project a circle, same size and brightness. But with the 5, the outer edge looks fuzzy. With the 3, the circumference of the circle is very solid and sharp. Also the light color on the 3 is more white colored light, while the color on the 5 is slightly blue(er). This gives the 3 more usable light on the streets. From my own perspective, the 5 isn't necessarily brighter than the 3 either.Battery life, I have not tested.I do recommend the 3 over the 5, especially for people looking for a bike light under 20 bucks. Thanks for reading, I hope this helps.

I also wanted to note that both of the products were bought at the same time and the batteries were fresh (from factory).

Edit: After a few weeks of swapping between the 5 and 3, I have noticed the 5 to be slightly brighter than the 3.They both use the same type of mounts so you can swap back and forth like I did.

Planet Bike Blinky "3" 3-Led Rear Bicycle Light Review

Planet Bike Blinky '3' 3-Led Rear Bicycle LightThe purpose of any LED tail light is to make sure cars coming up behind you know you're there. The Planet Bike Blinky 3 does a fine job at that, stays put, has great battery life and doesn't cost much. You get two mounting options - a big cheap plastic clip for the seat post and a smaller clip for a rear side strut.I put mine on the seat post.In past years when I had a baby seat I would have used the side strut. You also get two settings - steady and blinking. That's the only negative in my book.I can't imagine using anything but blinking.

This is pretty much a no brainer. My wife's has been through almost 8 years of abuse and has had only one battery change.I didn't think twice when it was time for my bike and my son's to get this safety enhancement.I now bike a lot during the late night.I haven't had a close call with a car coming up from my rear yet.Enough said.

Update - 8 months later (6/5/09):I added a bike rack over my rear wheel and had to re-mount this because the rack's cargo obscured the seat post.Neither included mount fit the small gauge bars of the rack.I was able to use the small mounting clip by adding a small strip of black rubber (cut from an old inner tube scrap I had lying around).Because of the orientation of the rack's bars my light is now sideways. This arrangement works fine for me.I'm still on my original set of batteries and I use the light at least once a week.
