Mantis Lil Burmeister Boys 12- Inch Bike, Gray/Blue Review

Mantis Lil Burmeister Boys 12- Inch Bike, Gray/BlueI thought my little one could ride a 16, but after a few tries I realized the 16 was just a tad big.So I got this bike, easy to assemble. Now it works great, the only concern I have is that the seatpost angle could be a bit more canted, so the rider is less upright. That would adjust the seat to handlebar distance.

Huffy Boys Alpine 24-Inch Bike Review

Huffy Boys Alpine 24 inch BikeWell, I got this bike last summer (2008) and I rode it only a few times. I like biking but after riding this clumsy bike, I didn't feel like it. First of all the frame is REALLY heavy. The wheels are small (24-inch). It takes forever to accelerate with this one. OK, it is a mountain bike, so if you are going to use it off-road and looking for a cheap bike this my be alright. But for city use, I recommend you to stay away from it.

Finding the Right Bike
To really enjoy cycling, it's important to find a bicycle that works for you. Here are some things to keep in mind when you're in the market for a new bike:
The Right Ride
In general, bikes are broken down into three major categories:

Road and Racing Bikes--As a general rule, road and racing are built for speed and longer distances on paved surfaces. Thinner tires, lightweight 29-inch (700c) wheels, and drop bars that allow for a more aerodynamic position are the norm. Most road bikes, regardless of price, offer many gears for tackling both hilly and flat terrain.
Mountain Bikes--With their larger tires, hill-friendly gearing, and upright position, mountain bikes are very popular for all types of riding, both on pavement and off. Mountain bikes that are designed specifically for rugged trail use typically feature a suspension fork. Some may have rear suspension, as well. A quick change of the tires on any mountain bike--even one that you use regularly on trails--adds to its versatility and makes it a worthy street machine.
Comfort/Cruiser Bikes--For tooling around on bike paths, light trails, or for cruising a quiet beach-side lane, comfort/cruiser bikes are the ticket. With a super-relaxed riding position, padded seats, and limited or no gearing, these bikes are made for enjoying the scenery and having fun with the family.

The Right Price
A bike's price boils down to three essentials: frame materials, bike weight, and component quality and durability.

Entry-level--You'll find a wide range of comfort and cruiser bikes in this category, as well as some lower-end mountain bikes and road bikes. Most will have steel frames and components that are designed to last for several years with frequent use.
Mid-range--Bikes in this range may feature a lighter aluminum frame with mid-range components that keep performing after miles of use. If you're looking for a quality bike that is relatively lightweight and will stand up to abuse, this is the "sweet spot." Most serious commuter and touring bikes fall into this category, as do mid-range mountain bikes with a decent front suspension.
High-end--Racers and serious enthusiasts who expect lightweight, high-performance components will want to stick to this category. For road bikes, exotic frame materials (carbon fiber, titanium) and ultralightweight components can add thousands to the price tag. Mountain bikes in this class often feature advanced front and rear suspension technology, as well as components designed to handle lots of rugged trail action.

The Right Size
Fit is crucial for comfort, control, and proper power and endurance on a bike. Here are some basic bike fit tips:

Stand-over Height--To find out if a bike's overall height fits your body, measure your inseam. Next, determine how much clearance you'll need between your crotch and the top tube of the bike. For a mountain bike, you'll want three to five inches of clearance. A road bike should offer between one and two inches of clearance, while a commuter bike should have two to four inches. Compare the stand-over height for a given bike to your measurements (inseam + clearance) to determine the right bike height.
Top Tube Length--You can measure your torso to get a good estimate of proper top tube length. First, make a fist and extend your arm. Measure from the center of your fist to the end of your collarbone (the part that intersects your shoulder). Next, measure your torso by placing a book against your crotch with the spine facing up. Measure from the spine to the bottom of your throat (the spot between your collarbones). Finally, add the two measurements (arm length + torso length), divide the number in half, and subtract six inches. This is your approximate top tube length. Compare this number to a bike's posted top tube length. You can allow for about two inches longer or shorter, as most bikes can be adjusted via stem length/height and saddle fore/aft position to make fine adjustments to the fit.
Bikes for Women--Proportionally, women tend to have a shorter torso and longer legs than men. Bike makers design women's bikes that offer a shorter top tube and many comfort/cruiser bikes built for women may also provide more stand-over clearance.

The Right Accessories
When you make a bike purchase, don't forget these crucial add-ons:

    Helmet (this is a must!)
    Seat pack
    Lock
Hydration pack, or water bottle and bottle cage
    Spare tubes
    Portable bike pump
    Gloves

Cars 16-Inch Boys BMX Bike Review

Cars 16 inch Boys BMX BikeI think they spent 70% of the cost to build this bike on the decals instead of quality parts. Every time I turn around something is coming off or falling apart on the stupid thing. The bike seems rickety when my son rides it. It makes me nervous just listening to the thing go down the road. We've had the training wheels fall off...the handlebars get crooked...the pedals come off multiple times (like they unscrew themselves from the bike because they don't turn easily enough on their own)...and today the chain fell off. I have owned bicycles since I was a kid and spent lots of time riding them, and I have never had a chain fall off a bike. My son rides his bike when I go on my morning walk, and it seems that every day or two, I have to fix something on the stupid bike before we can go on our walk. Never again will I buy a bicycle that has decals on it from some popular figure in the media because they spend all their money on that rather than spending the money on building a quality item that is worth what the customer pays for it.

Mantis Burmeister Boys 16- Inch Bike, Black/Red Review

Mantis Burmeister Boys 16- Inch Bike, Black/RedI bought this bike for my 4 year old son.He already learned how to ride without training wheels on his 12 inch bike, so we didn't need the training wheels that came with this bike.My one complaint about this purchase was the directions for putting it together. It came with a thick, very generic instruction manual that didn't offer me much help at all.Fortunately there weren't too many pieces and unless you've never seen a bike before it was pretty easy to figure out.Took maybe 30 minutes or so?The chain also fell off a few times when he went over bumps or off the curb, but we moved the rear wheel back and it took care of the problem easily. My son's main complaint was the lack of a kickstand but I solved that problem with a $4 one from Target that works great as an add on.Things I like about the bike are that it's basic and simple for a beginner (no hand brakes to confuse things), it is lightweight, and nice looking. One note - My son is constantly making skid marks on the sidewalks and driveway and I was shocked to see that the back tire is already balding a bit.Oops!I think that's just his fault though, not the tire.

Cars 12-Inch Boys BMX Bike by Huffy Review

Cars 12 inch Boys BMX Bike by HuffyMy 3 years old son loves it since he is a Cars freak.Nothing special about this bike other than it is blight red and it is a Lightning McQueen.Assembled easy, but the manual is worthless.Shipping box and packing material was not so good so some parts were sticking out of the box, but no damages were found.Weight distribution is excellent and trading wheel is adjustable.Over all this is an excellent safe bike for small children.

Dora the Explorer Bike (12-Inch Wheels) Review

Dora the Explorer BikeAt 2 my daughter got a trike that we pushed her around on. We got this bike for her at 3 and it was a bit big for her.It was perfect to grow into and now that she has it figured out, she zooms around on it like a teenager.I figured out that the trike was hard for her to manuever because the pedals are actually on the front wheel. This bike actually gave her more balance and she figured out she actually did have the manpower to pedal herself. She is now 4 and still rides her bike everyday, and we ride down to the park on weekends. We are getting braver each day and getting ready to try taking off the training wheels.GREAT BIKE, Great investment and you certainly can't beat DORA, she's our favorite!

Speed Racer BikeI bought this bike for my three year old son for Christmas. It was simple to assemble and easy for him to ride. The only thing that was remotely hard was getting the brake cable adjusted, I suppose that I'm not mechanically inclined on brake cables.
