Kettler Candy Girls' Bike (16-Inch Wheels) Review

Kettler Candy Girls' BikeWe paid extra for the Kettler name because we wanted to avoid poorly made, potentially dangerous merchandise from big box stores. We had previously purchased a Kettler tricycle for our child and were very pleased with the German made quality. Knowing that more and more manufacturers are moving production to China, I investigated this pretty thoroughly. I did not attempt to contact Kettler and I wish I had.

When I received the bike and assembled it, the first thing I noticed was the atrocious quality of the welds. Any first year trade school student could do better. The welds are pitted and jagged. If any quality control procedure at all had been in place, this bike would have been rejected. This prompted me to look closely at the box where I found the "Made in China" label.

Please understand that I have nothing against the people of China. They are certainly capable of producing high quality goods. The sole reason any Western corporation moves production overseas is to produce those goods cheaply. The retail price stays the same or increases, and the company makes more profit for the investors.

What angers me is that the country of origin was not clearly identified. Kettler is trading on their previously well earned reputation for quality and substituting slipshod garbage like the Candy model. We paid twice as much for a bike with the Kettler name. I guess there is no other alternative, but if that's the case we'll just go buy the junk at big box mart like everyone else.

Columbia Girl's Song Bird Bike, Pink, 16-Inch Review

Columbia Girl's Song Bird Bike, Pink, 16 inchThe picture did not represent the bike we received. The major difference was that the photo shows a hand brake but the unit we received had a 'coaster' brake. The item arrived exactly when it was supposed to but was missing a couple of items:1 of 4 plastic guards for the wheel nuts and an instruction sheet.Three adults (including an engineer) managed to assemble the bike in about 90 minutes although we're still guessing whether everything is in the right place! The quality is good, as expected, but I doubt that the decorative decals will last very long, and that is disappointing considering the price. However, the frame is sound and the paint quality is excellent so I'm sure it will render many hours of happy use--even if the decals do come off!

Diamondback Impression Girls' Bike (20-Inch Wheels) Review

Diamondback Impression Girls' BikeIf you are clear on how bikes go together, no problem. The 20" Diamondback Impression Girl's bike (and another Diamondback boy's bike I bought) seems to be made for assembly by a knowledgable bike mechanic.

It is mostly assembled (the good news), but the part that got me was the trying to get the handlebar on.There was a plastic cap on the tube where the handlebar stem goes (my lingo here probably gives away my level of familiarity with bike parts). It took me 30 minutes to get it off.Half of that was trying to guess at how to do it without damaging anything.Once I got it off, I could see the tabs on the cap were angled upward to ease putting the cap on, but worked against getting it off.Cactus needles are like this...designed to go in but not come back out.The new bike has plenty of scratches around the top of the handlebar tube.

Oh, and did you know with bikes some things screw on opposite of normal.Like the brake pedals.I have a vague recollection things like that are to keep them from unscrewing from the direction of rotation their parts move. But, the non-instructions won't tell you that.

Oh, and the fork should face forward, not backward.I knew enough by this point to unscrew one Allen bolt and turn the handlebar around.I saw that on another bike and decided to fix this one.Oh darn! The the brake cable needed to be moved around the front of the handlebar stem.Uh oh.I broke some piece I don't know the name of while trying to unhook the brake cable and move it.So, now I have to find that part somewhere and replace it.

Is it a quality bike?I'll be able to judge that when I fix the broken part on the handle brake and my daughter can ride it.Seems like it's worth twice the price of bikes I could have gotten at Targ-Mart.And the quality may be equal the to the $220 going rate for kids bikes at local bike shops. So is the $50 savings worth the setup aggrevation? If you're a bike novice or think you would need instuctions, you may need to look elsewhere.

Diamondback Joker BMX Bike (20-Inch Wheels) Review

Diamondback Joker BMX BikeI bought this bike for Christmas for my cousin. He loves the bike so far and it seemed more than capable of dealing with my 240lb weight, so it should do quite well with a 10 year old.

There was an adjustment nut missing for the ORYG that a local bike shop gave me, other than that, putting it together was a snap.

Diamondback Mini Della Cruz Girls' Cruiser (16-Inch Wheels) Review

Diamondback Mini Della Cruz Girls' CruiserWe bought this bike for our daughter's 4th birthday next month. I wanted two things out of a bike:

1. No corporate marketing of Disney Princesses, Dora-the-(dead-eyed)-Explorer, or Barbie. *shudder* This is more difficult to find than you might think.

2. A bike that was high enough quality as to encourage riding, and make it a pleasure, rather than rendering it a tedious task soon to be given up.

I think this bike fits the bill on both counts, though as my child has yet to ride it, I don't know much about how well it functions. I will update post-gifting with my impressions that way.

Here are my initial impressions of the pros and cons:

Pros:

- This bike is gorgeous. The style is very retro circa 1950's, with the full, generous, shock-absorbing seat, the 50's aqua (it's definitely more aqua than the baby blue it appears to be in the photo) and salmon-pink accents on the wheels and flowers. The other accent colors are black, white - and in the center flourish there is a champagne-tan color as a backdrop to the pink and white flowers. All the designs on the bike have a glittery appearance that sort of shines in the light. The seat, too is embellished with a scant floral design in pink and white, as are the fenders - these things I found difficult to discern in the photos.

- I love that the tires are primarily black, so that when they make contact with the dirty ground they won't instantly be rendered used and filthy looking.

- The bike, from all appearances looks as if it would be very comfortable and easy to ride.

Cons:

- There really are no instructions. Zero. There's a really bad photo of the training wheel assembly that you won't be able to glean any information from, and a 'users manual' with lots of tips about not riding at night, and how dangerous that is, and always wearing a helmet, and even a thorough layout of a brake system that this bike doesn't have, but there's not a single detail about how you're supposed to assemble this thing.

I've never assembled a bike before, so I found this especially daunting, and it took me an hour and a half... which isn't terrible, all things considered.

Thankfully, the bike does come partially assembled. It is the buyers job to assemble the training wheels, which after a few mishaps I discovered needed to lock into an existing piece on the rear wheel. The front fender (that's what that strange u-shaped metal bar is for) and wheel, seat, handlebars (which also must be adjusted to the correct angle), pedals, and a couple reflectors that you have to guess on the intended location of. There are tools that come with the bike - 4 Allen wrenches and a double-sided wrench that fits the majority of the bolts, but I still needed a Phillips head and ratchet for miscellaneous other bolts and to occasionally hold something in place while tightening the other side.

I think I managed to get it put together correctly. It seems study, but I would have loved some validation on this point, as I am a complete novice at assembling bikes.

- The bike, as other reviewers mentioned, arrived with a few minor scratches. Seems to me, had it been protected a little better in shipping, this wouldn't have happened.

-The flower stickers were not applied as well as I would have hoped. There are a few areas where there were small bubbles under the stickers around the edges, and they couldn't be smoothed. I think this will effect the longevity of the appearance of the stickers, as dirt will get under them and cause them to peal.

- I wish the bike wasn't made in China. Not a totally unexpected detail, but I personally prefer things to be made anywhere but China.

One more tidbit of note is that the colors of the bike are unusual and would be difficult to match, and that's worth considering if you're ordering accessories. If you order baby blue or something in the standard pink range, it'll probably clash.

I knew I wanted a Giro helmet, and so we bought the Lucille the Bike Giro Rodeo helmet alongside it, and thankfully, the range of color in that helmet allowed for it to match - perfectly - though the styles are a little different, but there aren't really any helmets with a 50's look anyway. A plain black or white helmet would look nice alongside it too.

We bought white streamers and I'd recommend that anyone else buying streamers do the same. The bike has just enough white that the white streamers look like they 'belong'. Our other accessories are chrome and black, and look like they were made for this bike. I'm so glad I decided to stay way from the pink and blue spectrum!

I know, probably overkill in the information department, but when you're spending this much money, it makes sense to have a better idea of what you'll be getting.

All in all, I'm pretty pleased with this bike. If you want something different, there really aren't any other options, especially in this price range - I spent a lot of time researching.

I can't wait to see my daughter's reaction come her birthday. I think she'll love it. I mean, who wouldn't? This really is a hip little ride for youngsters :)

Diamondback Jr Viper BMX Bike (20-Inch Wheels) Review

Diamondback Jr Viper BMX BikeI purchased this bicycle for my son's 8th birthday. He has been off trainers for a while and is ready for handle brakes. I like that the bike has both a handle brake and a pedal brake. This is perfect for this learning transition. Shorter riders will quickly realize that grabbing the handle brake can help in steadying the bike while mounting.

I am very impressed with the quality of parts. Aluminum rims, easily adjustable gooseneck, long seat post for maximum adjustability, these features can be very helpful in extending the life of the bike.

The size of the bike frame and riding position fit my son perfectly. For your consideration I will say the frame minimum standing clearance is 20 inches. I do not recommend this bike for a child whose inseam is less than 21 inches. My son measures 21 inch inseam and is very comfortable riding.

The package arrived with a full set of allen wrenches and a open ended wrench. All tools necessary for initial assembly are in the box. If you buy, be sure to check all bolts before riding. The factory does not always get every one tight.
