Kawasaki Girl's K20G 20-Inch Bicycle Review

Kawasaki Girl's K20G 20 inch BicycleMy daughter is petite; so, we got her this pricey 5-speed bike with 20-inch wheels for xmas 2008.Item arrived well-packaged but with a few friction marks.I had to install the front wheel, seat, pedals, water bottle cage, and handlebar.I broke them down to these steps.
1. Front wheel looked straight but the wheel did not spin freely.I had to regrease and repack the wheel bearings.
2. Handlebars installed easily. The cables and shifters are pre-installed; I just had to loosen the adjusting bolt and the handlebar slipped into place.
3. Pedals screwed in easily.
4. Seat had to be adjusted to correct angle. The bolts are hard to get to, but hopefully, you only need to do this once.
5. Water cage is flimsy and I hate where it goes 'cause the water bottle gets dirt and grime really fast.
6. Brakes. The V-brakes are strong but I had to adjust the front brakes.I've always found cantilever and V-brakes a clumsy burdensome ordeal. These were no exception. If you don't have the patience to do it right, take the bike to a bike mechanic and get them set right the first time.
7. The travel on the brake levers was too much for my daughter's small hands. On her maiden voyage I saw her struggle to grasp the levers to come to a stop.Turning the adjustment screws all the way in was still not enough.I contacted the manufacturer and they sent me longer adjustment screws. That did the trick. So, you may want to keep an eye on your brake levers.Lever to outside of handlebar should be no more than three inches. My mtn bike and hybrid bikes are 3.5.This bike was originally set at about 3.75 - way too large a gap for a 10 year old.

Now that the bike is finely tuned, it rides great. My daughter loves it and it rides well and stops on a dime. The bike is heavy, but the extra gearing will compensate for that.Again, I only got this bike because my daughter is petite and quickly out grew a single-speed 20-inch bike, but she is not big enough to jump on a 24-inch bike. This will tie her over for a couple more years.

I ride and work on my own bikes; I have a tandem, hybrid, mountain and even a lowrider bike.I have the tools and knowledge to make all the necessary adjustments to make this bike road worthy.I feel this bike should have been put together better at the factory than in the condition I received it - I should not have had to touch the bearings and brakes. Most buyers should consider taking this bike to a qualified bike mechanic.

Kettler Candy Girls' Bike (16-Inch Wheels) Review

Kettler Candy Girls' BikeWe paid extra for the Kettler name because we wanted to avoid poorly made, potentially dangerous merchandise from big box stores. We had previously purchased a Kettler tricycle for our child and were very pleased with the German made quality. Knowing that more and more manufacturers are moving production to China, I investigated this pretty thoroughly. I did not attempt to contact Kettler and I wish I had.

When I received the bike and assembled it, the first thing I noticed was the atrocious quality of the welds. Any first year trade school student could do better. The welds are pitted and jagged. If any quality control procedure at all had been in place, this bike would have been rejected. This prompted me to look closely at the box where I found the "Made in China" label.

Please understand that I have nothing against the people of China. They are certainly capable of producing high quality goods. The sole reason any Western corporation moves production overseas is to produce those goods cheaply. The retail price stays the same or increases, and the company makes more profit for the investors.

What angers me is that the country of origin was not clearly identified. Kettler is trading on their previously well earned reputation for quality and substituting slipshod garbage like the Candy model. We paid twice as much for a bike with the Kettler name. I guess there is no other alternative, but if that's the case we'll just go buy the junk at big box mart like everyone else.

Columbia Girl's Song Bird Bike, Pink, 16-Inch Review

Columbia Girl's Song Bird Bike, Pink, 16 inchThe picture did not represent the bike we received. The major difference was that the photo shows a hand brake but the unit we received had a 'coaster' brake. The item arrived exactly when it was supposed to but was missing a couple of items:1 of 4 plastic guards for the wheel nuts and an instruction sheet.Three adults (including an engineer) managed to assemble the bike in about 90 minutes although we're still guessing whether everything is in the right place! The quality is good, as expected, but I doubt that the decorative decals will last very long, and that is disappointing considering the price. However, the frame is sound and the paint quality is excellent so I'm sure it will render many hours of happy use--even if the decals do come off!

Diamondback Miz Della Cruz Girls' Cruiser (20-Inch Wheels) Review

Diamondback Miz Della Cruz Girls' CruiserBeing a bike snob I researched many bikes of this style and decided on the Miz Della Cruz by Diamond Back for my little girl. Her 16" was a Diamond Back and we were very happy with it.Also being a BMX racer back in the day, and a friend of the Diamond Back Team Manager Sandy Finkelman, I have a warm spot in my heart for the Daimond Back name.DB is one of the only companies that make reasonable priced bikes that has not been acquired by Pacific (Dural), the company that ruined GT and Mongoose.Diamond Back is now owned by Raleigh America which employs Americans!Raleigh is one of the oldest UK bike companies making quality bikes. For the money this is a quality bike and a great value. The yellow is a pearl color and more beautiful in person.I highly recommend this bicycle.

Mantis Boys Grizzled 20-Inch Bike Review

Mantis Boys Grizzled 20 inch BikeThe packaging was horrible. There were holes in the box. Although the holes were far from where the handle bar was placed, the handlebar has some scratches and chipped paint as well as other parts of the bicycle.

A little concerned too because the bicycle has no brakes... we have not assembled it yet but I hope it's got pedal brakes. It's for an 8-yr-old boy who owned a 20-inch bike before. If it doesn't have pedal brakes, then I guess we have to spend extra to get front and back grip brakes...
